The Kennet tool and cutter grinder in the workshop.

The Kennet Tool and Cutter grinder is less sophisticated than the Quorn and as a consequence is much easier to build but has the advantage that it is easier to use and quicker to set up.  However it is still a very versatile machine and can be used to accurately sharpen end mills, slot drills, slitting saws and  lathe tools.  It can off course also be used as an off hand grinder.

The machine consists of a spindle rigidly mounted to a base plate, this spindle runs in angular contact bearings which are spring loaded to give the correct pre-load.  Three tool holders for slot drills, slitting saws and lathe tools are supplied which mount on a compound slide rest which can be raised, lowered and  tilted to provide the correct grinding angles and clearances.  A protractor scale and  stops help in the accurate grinding of cutters.

A range of grinding wheels are available, each mounted on it's own arbor to allow quick interchange obviating the need to true up each wheel each time it is mounted on the machine.  It is important to run grinding wheels at their correct speed.  The preferred motor we supply is a 1/6 hp  2,800 rpm but if a larger and more common 1/4 hp 1425 rpm motor is available then we can supply the necessary pulley castings to obtain the correct wheel speed.

This machine, as with all M.E.S.  products is supplied as a kit of parts and castings. Most work can be done on a 3 1/2" lathe, however in this instance there is also a need to use a vertical milling machine because the base casting is too large to be machined in the lathe.  All the sliding surfaces of the compound slide are surface ground by us and the protractor scale is supplied finished.   All screws and dowel pins are supplied together with a set of dimensioned drawings and working instructions.  Motors, switches and grinding wheels are also available.
